Road Rage Accidents

road rage

Road rage accidents are some of the worst accidents that can happen. This is not to say that they are the most devastating accidents, but rather that road rage is unnecessary. Therefore any accidents that result from a road rage incident are just as unnecessary. And any injuries or deaths that happen because of a road rage accident could have easily been prevented.

Road rage accidents occur too frequently. Aggressive driving and road rage is to be blamed for numerous deaths. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), between the years 2009 and 2014, 1,350 collisions were attributed to aggressive driving and road rage. More than 1,500 people lost their lives in those collisions.

Also, according to the NHTSA:

  • Aggressive driving causes 66 percent of traffic fatalities.
  • A firearm has been used in 37 percent of aggressive driving incidents.
  • Males under the age of 19 are most likely to drive aggressively.
  • 50 percent of drivers on the receiving end of aggressive behavior have admitted to responding with aggressive behavior.
  • 2 percent of motorists admit they tried to run an aggressive driver off of the road.

Choosing an Attorney for Your Road Rage Accident Case

It’s almost impossible to decide which attorney is right for your road rage accident case in the sea of attorneys out there who boast that they are the “best personal injury attorney” on the planet.

The truth is: none of them are “the best” attorney. We will not claim to be “the best” attorney, either.

We will point you in the direction of my past clients’ opinions about me. Sure, we have a testimonials page, but everyone knows that we can pick and choose which testimonials to put on our website and which ones to toss out. You want to do your research for potential lawyers on Avvo, where we have no control over what our clients say about us. Or you could go to Yelp, where client opinions are not cherry-picked, nor are they paid for.

Road Rage FAQ

What is road rage?

According to the NHTSA, road rage is when a motorist “commits moving traffic offenses to endanger other persons or property; an assault with a motor vehicle or other dangerous weapon by the operator or passenger of one motor vehicle on the operator or passengers of another motor vehicle.”

What is the key difference between road rage and aggressive driving?

According to the NHTSA, aggressive driving is a traffic offense, and road rage is criminal.

Where did the phrase “road rage” come from?

The term “road rage” was coined in the late 1980s when the Los Angeles news station, KTLA, discussed a string of shootings on several of Los Angeles’ freeways.

What causes road rage?

You may think that road rage is something that other people experience. The truth of the matter is: many of us are guilty of behaving aggressively while driving.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Have you driven over the speed limit because you were in a rush? Have you tried to beat a red light because you were late getting somewhere?
  • Have you ever honked, flashed your headlights, or tailgated another person driving in front of you because they are driving too slow?
  • Do you tend to honk your horn frequently?
  • Have you ever gestured or voiced an obscenity at another driver or otherwise communicated in anger toward another driver?

If your answer was “yes” to any of the above questions, you might be susceptible to acting aggressively and exhibiting road rage. Often, a person acts out because they are experiencing stress in other parts of their life. Sometimes, we act out because we think another driver is acting aggressively, even if the act or behavior was unintentional. When traffic and the stresses of driving are added in, it is almost like an explosion occurs.
