Avandia and Its Possible Side Effects

avandiaAvandia is used occasionally along with other medicines to treat Type 2 diabetes. It helps control blood sugar levels as it makes the cells of the body sensitive to insulin.

Avandia is not the same as other diabetes medications. It helps the body use its own insulin to improve blood sugar control. Most medications for diabetes help the body create more insulin.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a disease that affects the way your body process sugar. There is no cure for Type 2 diabetes, but the disease can be managed or even prevented by eating healthy, exercising, and maintaining a healthy weight.

When you have Type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level or your body is resistant to the effects of insulin. Insulin regulates the movement of sugar into your cells.

Safety Concerns with Avandia

Since 2007, the Food and Drug Administration has safety concerns with Avandia. The makers of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, did not disclose detailed information about potential side effects, and this had led to Avandia product liability lawsuits.

Side Effects

Possible harmful side effects include:

  • Stroke
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Liver toxicity
  • Heart attack
  • Congestive heart failure

The short news clip from CNN below discusses whether the maker of Avandia concealed the drug’s link to heart attacks.
