The ignition switch, also known as the starter switch, activates a motorized vehicle’s central electrical system. 

Other than initiating power to the starter solenoid and the other components of the ignition system, it also usually allows the power to most of the accessories in the vehicle. These accessories include the stereo system, power windows, window wipes, and air conditioning.

In most vehicles, the ignition switch still requires the insertion of a key into a lock that has been built into the ignition switch mechanism. Newer vehicles only require that a transmitter is within a certain distance of a receiver in the car for a button to be activated to start the ignition system and often start the motor.

At times the manufacturer of a vehicle will use faulty ignition switches that can lead to problems in operating the vehicle. One such problem is the sudden turning off of the engine and electrical systems of the car. This leads to an inability to use any power brakes or power steering.
